The Bulls Head Inn, Ogden, off the A640 Newhey to Denshaw Road
Ogden Reservoir
Looking towards Piethorne Reservoir at the head of the valley
A pleasant pub in a hamlet tucked away between hills on one side and the Ogden and Piethorne reservoirs on the other. It is on what appears to be a road to nowhere, the lane that leads through the hamlet and alongside the reservoirs turns into a bridlepath at the head of the valley without linking up with another road. However, in the days when the only transport was on foot or on horseback, the hamlet was on the main route between Newhey and Denshaw and Ripponden. There is a cobbled byway that leads steeply uphill from the last houses in Higher Ogden, past the edge of Crompton Moor and on to Denshaw, and a bridlepath at the head of Piethorne reservoir that goes uphill to Ripponden Road and leads past the Rams Head Inn. The two pubs are only three miles apart, so it is possible to visit both - on foot or horseback - in the same afternoon. (Ogden and Piethorne reservoirs are on OS Explorer Map 277, the Bulls Head is marked with the 'blue beer mug' sign at 122950).
